Arrive prepared, choose appropriate effort, and make the most of your first coach-led group session.
You belong in the room
Walking into a new fitness class can feel intimidating. Remember that everybody had a first session. A well-run class should help participants understand the workout, offer alternatives, and make room for different levels of experience.

Before you arrive
Read the class description and choose something appropriate for your current activity level. Wear comfortable clothes and suitable shoes, bring water, and arrive a little early. If you have movement limitations or questions, tell the instructor before class begins so they can suggest modifications.
What usually happens
Many classes start with a warm-up and a short explanation of the main movements. The work may involve timed intervals, repetitions, or stations. Listen to the instructor’s cues and focus on the technique before adding speed or resistance. It is fine to pause, take water, or use a lower-impact alternative.

Set your own pace
You do not need to match the most experienced person in the room. Choose effort based on your own ability that day. If a move feels unstable, ask for an alternative. The best first class is one that leaves you feeling informed and interested in returning, not one that leaves you unable to move the next day.
After the session
Cool down, rehydrate, and note what you enjoyed. Ask the instructor which class or level would be a good next step. If the format suits you, try it again before deciding whether it is for you. Familiarity helps, and community can be a strong reason to keep showing up.
